Production

Several characters and plot elements are also based on the 1940 version of The Thief of Bagdad. One of the first issues that the animators faced during production of Aladdin was the depiction of Aladdin himself.

In the first draft, Aladdin had three friends (Babkak, Omar, and Kassim), a magic ring and two genies. In the spin-off series Aladdin, Omar was the name of the fruit-merchant.

This is (as of 2006) the only traditionally animated film to be nominated for the MTV Movie Award for Best Picture.

On what came to be known among the Aladdin animators as Black Friday, then Disney head Jeffrey Katzenberg told the team to scrap virtually everything they'd been working on for months and start all over again.
